Holding On or Letting Go

10/03/2018

This will be a new type of article. We are through 4 weeks of the season and there have been some question marks with certain players. Many fantasy owners are faced with the decision of holding onto struggling players or getting rid of them all together. I am hoping this sheds some light for those decisions. I will post a few players who I would recommend holding onto and some that I am completely out on. For the players to hold onto, I would't force it. I would recommend being patient. If you were offered a good trade and it makes sense for your team, then take it. You should always listen to trade offers. As for the players I am letting go, I am willing to drop them if you can get a better option for your team. That is the biggest thing. It is important to make sure every move you make benefits your team. I would first work to see if anyone is interested in a trade before dropping certain players, but I will outline that below. I will start out with some guys I am hanging on to, then move to the guys I'm letting go.

My Holds:

Keenan Allen (WR)- I know he hasn't performed like the Keenan Allen that exploded during the end of last season but it will be coming. He is currently the WR32 on the year. He has had 3 double digit fantasy games in PPR scoring. Although, he hasn't topped 70 yards since week 1. I think there are more people worried in standard rather than in PPR leagues. His time will come. He has played similarly to how he did at the start of last season. He started off really slow and then blew up. You need to be patient with him.

Dalvin Cook (RB)- He has frustrated many fantasy owners with his inability to get healthy. We saw a glimpse of his potential in week one when he ran 16 times and caught 6 passes. I expect him to get back to where he left off in week one. I am hoping the Vikings sit him in his upcoming game so he can work on getting fully healthy. You most likely invested a high draft pick in Cook and if you can't get a solid offer from him I'd advise to hold on.

LeSean McCoy (RB)- Here is another guy who has been dealing with injuries. Full disclosure, I am currently looking to trade him. I won't trade him for penny's on the dollar, but I need some WR help and if I can get a solid WR2 I'll pull the trigger. I do think better days are coming for McCoy. He himself didn't know why he got so little touches in last weeks game. The Bills will need to get him more involved to win games. I will expect him to be used more this week against the Titans.

Royce Freeman (RB)- I get it, I'm irritated about the decision to start him every week also. I have built around him in all the leagues I currently have him in. I have the luxury of sitting him in most leagues until he separates himself from Lindsay. The Broncos need to give him the ball more. Lindsay has been impressive but Freeman has scored in three straight games. He looked great against the Chiefs on Monday night. He had multiple broken tackles including a few on his TD run. I would look to see if anyone is looking at his stat line and is intrigued by his 3 straight scores. For me, I'm holding on.

Josh Gordon (WR)- His debut for the Patriots was nothing to get excited about. He has a questionable history and we are still seeing how he fits in this offense. Brady is excited to have such a great talent on this team and Gordon should come around soon. It is a very hard system to learn in such a short time and I expected him to start out slow. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets things going in the next two weeks.

Doug Baldwin (WR)- I am a huge Baldwin fan. He is a great player and has shown how successful he can be in fantasy football. Two weeks after he had a slight tear in his MCL he came out and played fairly well. He played almost 76% of plays in his return which was a great sign. He had 7 total targets on the game and will be the main target for Wilson going forward. He may not be 100% all season long but he is going to give it his all every game.

Quincy Enunwa (WR)- He has had back to back disappointing games but his role in this offense should not be overlooked. He is averaging 9 targets a game and owns a 29.6% target share for this team. That rate is the 8th best in the NFL. He will continue to get massive opportunities in every game going forward.

David Njoku (TE)- The TE position is completely depleted this year. You should not give up on Njoku just yet. You more than likely don't have a better option. His first game with Baker Mayfield was promising. He was targeted 7 times and caught 5 of them for 55 yards. It was a decent game. The 7 targets was the most notable thing for me. You won't be able to find this kind of opportunity on the waiver wire on a every week basis. Hold tight.

See ya! (Letting Go)

Derrick Henry (RB)- Now if you are hurting for RB, keep him. He has had double digit touches in every game this season. He hasn't done much with those touches. He has failed to rush for over 60 yards in any game this season. If I was solid at RB and there was a better option on the waiver wire, I wouldn't blame you for dropping him. I probably would if i had drafted him but I stayed away. I personally don't think I would pick him up if he were to be dropped in almost all of my leagues. There is probably 2 out of my 15 in which I would pick him up. Dion Lewis looks like the better RB this year.

Kenyan Drake (RB)- I wouldn't necessarily straight up drop him just yet. I would look to see if you can pair him with someone to get another RB. If he has another game where he has less than 10 yards rushing, I'm completely out. He is still has value for starting RB and you most likely don't have a better option to pick up. But if you are solid at RB and he has been riding the bench, I would look to get rid of him. He actually has been dropped in one of my leagues, but I will not be picking him up. I have plenty of RB depth and need help elsewhere.

Jamaal Williams (RB)- I have wrote about my love for Aaron Jones all year long. Jones is taking over this backfield sooner than later. Williams just has not looked good so far this season. He has zero redzone carries and is averaging just 3.7 yards per touch. He has topped 50 yards rushing just once and it took him 16 carries to get there. I would be dropping Williams sooner rather than later.

Chris Hogan (WR)- I'm out on Hogan. He was my player for the Patriots that I choose as my Love in my 32 Players I Love article. I missed bad on this one. I just don't understand why he isn't being used the right way. I am personally dropping him this week to make room for Mark Ingram who I was able to stash on IR. That specific league allows it. He has been dropped in a few leagues already but I have not picked him up in any. He isn't startable until we see something out of him in consecutive weeks.

Robby Anderson (WR)- He has not topped 3 catches or 45 yards all year long. The one game that he had 41 yards in was off of one catch. He has fallen to 3rd on the depth chart and just does not seem to get involved in this offense. I personally dropped him 2 weeks back. Unless there is a QB change, which I don't expect, he will not be usable.

Marquise Goodwin (WR)- Here is another guy who I loved coming into the season. That was because Jimmy Garoppolo was at QB. Jimmy G is out for the year with a torn ACL and C.J. Beathard should finish out the season. Goodwin looses a ton of upside without Garoppolo in. We saw Goodwin have monster games last year once the 49ers traded for Jimmy G. If there is a better option on your waiver wire or you need to drop someone to get a bye week fill in, he would be someone to look at.
